I have been wanting to make some type of Mod Podge ornament for my Halloween Tree but was having trouble deciding what kind I should do. I’ve seen some really cute gnomes with witches hats on Pinterest, but I wanted to try something a little different. I love sugar skulls, so when I found some really pretty floral napkins, I knew that’s what I wanted to try.

Supplies

To make a Mod Podge sugar skull ornament, you will need a flat wooden skull (I got mine at Dollar Tree), some pretty flowery napkins (which I also got at Dollar Tree), Mod Podge, a paint brush to apply it, some metallic gold paint, a paint brush to apply the gold paint, some stick-on jewels, a pair of scissors, about 6” of gold cord and a little hot glue to attach the cord if your wooden skull doesn’t already have a hole at the top.

Instructions

  1. Start by painting your wooden skull white.

2. When the paint is dry, cover the wooden skull with Mod Podge.

3. If your paper napkin is 2-ply, separate it so you’re using only 1 layer. Place the design down where you want it.

4. Brush more Mod Podge over the top of your napkin covering the wooden shape.

5. Using scissors or a razor knife, cut off the excess napkin.

6. Add some jewels. Even though I use stick-on jewels, I like to add a little glue to the back.

7. Dry brush a little metallic gold paint around the edges.

8. Cut about 6” of gold cord and either loop it through the hole at the top if it has one, or hot glue it onto the back.

Your Mod Podge Sugar Skull Ornament is ready to put on you Halloween Tree!
