You Can Never Have Too Many Books

I come from a family of readers. During the pandemic, I had lots of extra time to read and made the most of it. If you’ve never checked out thriftbooks.com, I highly recommend you do. Their selection of used and new books is great, shipping is free when you spend $15, and their customer service is excellent! I also love giving books as gifts, and a fun and easy craft to make to go along with a book is a handmade beaded bookmark!

Why Beaded Bookmarks Instead of Paper Bookmarks?

I know that paper bookmarks are also fun and easy to make, but I really like the beauty and the functionality of beaded bookmarks. There are so many beautiful colors of beads you can use, as well as a variety of types of beads which allows for endless possible combinations. Also, the string in between the two beaded sections lies nicely in the crease of the book, making it very unlikely to fall out.

Supplies

To make a beaded bookmark, all you need is some waxed cord, several beads and a pair of scissors. I’ve seen them made with hemp and twine also, but waxed cord is very durable and doesn’t fray, making it much easier to put through small beads.

Instructions

1. Decide what length bookmark you would like to make, then cut that length plus a few extra inches of  cord.  20” works pretty well for most bookmarks.

2. Tie a triple knot about 5 ½” from each end. It’s okay to have a little extra but you don’t want to not have enough.

3. To help me tie knots on each end, I like to place a needle or needle tool where I want the knot, then slide the knot tight against the needle before removing it.

4. After you put a few beads on that end, tie another triple knot to keep them from sliding off.

5. Repeat this on the other side.

4. Trim the ends, leaving only a small amount of cord left.

Your bookmark is done!

You can also use inexpensive plastic beads for bookmarks for kids.
